Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the wide array of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Read long as we discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the intelligent way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be darker or palerthan a pure color are considered a lower value.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds along with gemstones. An excellent cut will highlight the gemstone's color, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence regarding the cut is how consistently it reflects the light throughout the surface of the stone. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside. Gemstone color will be washed out.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This means the stones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles inside the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Jasper, Spinel or Natural moissanite and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Nevada you can hunt for Rock Crystal, Citrine, Nevada Turquoise and Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal.

Tips On small loose diamonds

The Cut is the factor that determines the brilliance of a diamond. A classic
round brilliant cut diamond has 58 facets : 33 on the top, 24 on the bottom, and
the culet (1 point at the bottom). Each of the diamond's facets must be placed
in exact geometric relation to one another when the stone is being cut. Quality
diamonds must be properly cut and not "spread", which means that the proper
proportions are compromised to make the diamond weigh more.
