Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the various gemstones found worldwide today. Read long as we examine the things you need to know when starting this interesting gemstone hobby.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the proper way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more highly prized it is. Traditionally, these specter colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Colors that are paler or darker tend to be less valued.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will showcase the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent way to determine the excellence in its cut is to check how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Next to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Normally large flaws are visible to the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. For example in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or check out the quartz regions in Cloncurry in Queensland, Australia.
